Cholsey Grange Farm, a 400-year-old family-run farm nestled in the Chiltern Hills, is celebrating a double triumph in 2024. The farm has been awarded Silver at the Farm Business Innovation Awards sponsored by NFU Mutual for Farm Diversification of the Year, recognizing its innovative business model and dedication to sustainability. Adding to this success, Cholsey Grange Farm has also been nominated for the prestigious Rural Oscar in the Rural Enterprise category, an accolade from the Countryside Alliance. The winner will be announced in early 2025.
Key initiatives include:
Cholsey Farm Riding: Offering horse owners the chance to explore the stunning Chiltern Hills via 17 pre-planned circular rides, this equestrian venture caters to a wide range of riders. With facilities like a tacking-up barn and the Old Piggery self-catering accommodation, visitors can enjoy flexible options for day trips or extended stays.
Award-Winning Campsite: Partnering with the Caravan and Motorhome Club, the campsite now features modern facilities and panoramic countryside views. In 2023, it was named the Best Small Campsite in England.
Conservation Efforts: The farm has planted eight acres of woodland, restored 800 meters of hedgerows, and established bird food plots that support at-risk species, such as Skylarks and Yellowhammers.
These ventures have made tourism a vital part of the farm’s income, contributing 28% of turnover, alongside agriculture and other diversified revenue streams.
“We are thrilled to be recognized with this nomination,” said Ted, owner of Cholsey Grange Farm. “The Rural Oscars shine a spotlight on the resilience and ingenuity of rural businesses. It’s an honour to represent our community in the Rural Enterprise category.”
Driving Local Business: Visitors are encouraged to explore nearby farm shops, pubs, and vineyards. The local village pub credits the farm as its biggest source of customers.
Mentorship and Collaboration: Ted mentors other rural businesses through Bucks Business First, providing guidance on marketing and diversification strategies.
Environmental Stewardship: By managing deer populations, maintaining rare chalk habitats, and protecting wildlife, the farm balances productive agriculture with environmental conservation.
A Legacy of Resilience and Sustainability: Agriculture remains at the heart of Cholsey Grange Farm, accounting for 24% of its income. However, diversification into tourism, lettings, venison sales, and marketing services has created a balanced, sustainable business model. This resilience has allowed the farm to overcome challenges like fluctuating agricultural prices and the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring its long-term success.
